Students New Year Gala Killing CCTV’s Show

2013’s New Year Gala show in Mainland China
was broadcasted via China’s Central Television (CCTV.)
Celebrities like Celine Dion, Song Zuying, Guo Degang,
and Liu Qian performed in the show.
Comments by netizens themed, “Final Version
of Disharmony on the New Year Show,” circulated widely.
The main theme of CCTV’s show, presenters and each
detail of the performances are taunted by the netizens.
Meanwhile, netizens highly recommend other New Year
shows of middle school kids in Guangzhou and other cities.
Netizens believe that students’ shows
are fresher and more creative.

“Final Version of Disharmony on the New Year Show”
criticized that CCTV New Year show presenters are dull, yet pretend to be cheerful.
It said, string words are outdated, yet “Celine Dion
and Na Ying lip-synched,” “Cai Ming has an evil tongue,”
“every performance had a person with unclear gender,”
“and Liu Qian teased Li Yundi”.
These topics were discussed more than any performance.

Han (Student, Hainan Province):
“The quality of the New Year’s show is declining.”

Beijing Evening News newspaper said that
the show lacked content of current affairs.
The show treated “corruption issues” as forbidden aspects,
daring not touch them.

Cultural critic Ye Kuangzheng said that this year’s show
was almost the same as that of past years’.
Ye believes the New Year show has been manipulated
by the propaganda department into a political state ceremony.

Ye Kuangzheng: “No matter whether it’s dancing
or talking performances, all became a formality.
In fact, this year’s dancing performances
are heaped with praises and eulogies for the CCP.
Talking performances’ topics focused on past public concerns.

Since it has been changed into a national political ceremony,
the show satires disadvantaged populations.
For example, in the past, skits and sitcoms satirized power
or elites. Now, that has almost disappeared from the show.”

Some netizens compared CCTV’s New Year show with
Dongfang TV’s in Shanghai, Jiangsu’s and Liaoning’s.
Critics say that Zhao Benshan didn’t have a chance to perform
on CCTV’s show this year, but his performances are more relaxed and funny in the local TV New Year’s Gala.

Netizens said that local TV programs are more vivid and
closer to peoples’ lives after reduced censorship.

Dong (Student, Guangdong Province):
“Hong Kong’s programs attract Guangdong people.
So we don’t watch CCTV’s New Year’s show.”

Ye Kuangzheng: “People are concerned about local affairs
with traditional native cultures, which are more entertaining.
The style of State Mode will slowly be cut off.”

“2013 National Middle School Students New Year Gala”
is designed by Guangdong students and performed by students from different cities.
It was posted on Youku website on February 7
which was circulated widely by netizens.
By the end of February 10, more than 1.09 million people
had viewed this video.

According to the official website of “2013 National Middle
School Students New Year Gala,” the purpose of this Gala is to correct the concept of CCTV’s New Year Gala.
These students posted: “We are not professional,
we can’t pretend to be profound; we are naive but fresh.
We may be nonsense, thus we have fearlessness
and dare to say: tomorrow belongs to us.”

Some comments said, in the past, most criticism about
the New Year Gala was: “it has too much propaganda.”
This is why CCTV’s New Year Gala style
is same every year.

Wang Kang, a writer in Mainland China, told Deutsche Welle
that he has refused to watch CCTV’s New Year Gala.
Wang believes that CCTV’s New Year Gala
represents the “official culture.”
Wang commented that CCTV bows to the market,
it still won’t cross the red line of ideology and nationalism.
Thus their programs appeared to be the current style of
“neither fish nor fowl.”
