Xi Jinping Shows His True Face: Remove Top Military Figure Xu Caihou

Xu Caihou,China’s military “big Tiger.” has been expelled from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Xu has been handed over to prosecutors for a court martial. Xu was the fourth official dismissed for corruption in the Politburo Standing Committee. Observers say that Xu, being Jiang faction’s key person, has been purged, a sign that current leader Xi Jinping has completely split from former leader Jiang Zemin. Let’s take a look.

On June 30, Xi Jinping presided over a Politburo meeting. He listened to an investigative report on Xu Caihou, former member of the Politburo. Xu reportedly took advantage of his post to secure promotion for individuals and accept bribes for himself and family members.

In the meeting, Xi Jinping approved the decision to expel Xu and hand him over to military prosecutors.

Although how much cash Xu has taken hasn’t been announced, media have circulated some rumors.

In February, Zhao Danna a 21year old woman was accused of using eight bank accounts in Hong Kong to launder HK$10 billion. After her arrest, she was released on bail of HK$30 million, then escaped while awaiting trial. Sources say that Zhao is connected with Xu Caihou’s case. Coincidently, the surname of Xu’s wife is also Zhao.

Zhang Jian, US-based China affairs expert: “Xi Jinping has got a princeling background which is different with Jiang’s faction. Thus he must remove all Jiang’s minions. It would be a big threat to Xi’s power if Jiang’s faction remains.”

Hu Jintao, former CCP leader, had been in charge of the military commission for eight years. However, deputy chairmen of the military commission Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou had overruled Hu’s power. They promoted their confidants and formed the Northwest and Northeast Armies

Radio Free Asia (RFA) cited Huang Dong, chairman of Macau Military Institute as saying that Xu Caihou and Guo Boxiong were promoted by Jiang Zemin personally as his right-hand men. From the Wang Lijun and the Bo Xilai incidents people can tell that the CCP colluded closely with the military. Without rooting out Xu Caihou, a danger would remain. Huang Dong believes that Xi Jinping has difficulty in taking back control.

Sources say that Xu Caihou allied with Bo Xilai, to prevent Xi’s succession. However, rumors that Xu has cancer and was being investigated had been circulated after CCP’s 18th congress.

Li Shanjian, US-based China affairs commentator analyzes that the main reason for Xi purging these officers is not because of corruption but for their involvement in a military coup.

Li Shanjian: “The military coup threatened Xi’s safety. All the relevant officers had played an important role in the coup. For Xi, if he hadn’t removed them, he wouldn’t feel safe.”

Xu Caihou is not the only one removed this time, Li Dongsheng, former vice minister of public security, Jiang Jiemin, former head of the state asset regulator, and Wang Yongchun were also expelled from the CCP.

The four figures have close ties with Zhou Yongkang. Observers say Zhou Yongkang’s case would float up soon.

Lan Shu, current affairs commentator: “Jiang faction officers including Zeng Qinghong, Zhou Yongkang, Xu Caihou, Jiang Zeming and more, are the biggest interest gainers over the past dozens of years. They are also mainly responsible for China’s social unrest.”

Lan Shu says that Xi Jinping has sensed the crisis that the CCP is facing. He intends to ease public unrest via anti-corruption. Without rooting out Jiang’s faction, the door of anti-corruption couldn’t be opened up.

Lin Zixu, current affairs commentator: “Jiang’s faction likely has been caught in a state of absolute hatred and fear. Now Jiang Zemin’s key officers in the CCP, Zhou Yongkang and Xu Caihou have been removed, we can imagine how Jiang would be feeling.”

Lin says that Xu Caihou’s downfall is symbolic of internal struggle. Xi Jinping and Jiang Zemin’s rivalry is open to the public. Jiang’s faction strongly counter attacked, for example, several days ago, Chen Guangbiao’s staged propaganda show in New York, was to “kidnap” the current administration as scapegoats.

Zhang Jian says that the CCP would be split into “pro-Xi faction” and “destroy-Xi faction”. A severe struggle would take place. However, as long as the CCP, which ignores human life and human rights, hasn’t been eliminated, civilians hardships would remain.
