Rui Chenggang’s Connection to Communist Party Power

In the wake of the investigation against CCTV host
Rui Chenggang, media have a lot of inside stories about him.
Rui has maintained close relationships with many CCP officials
and the so-called Second-Generation Reds.
In addition, he also ran a public relations firm to work
for CCTV directly.
Some analysts believe that the investigation against Rui is
related to former Vice Minister Li Dongsheng.
Some commentators also said that China’s media do not
“supervise power," and instead, it is “affiliated to power."
As to what kind of role Rui Chenggang has played,
let’s see our reports as follows:

Guo Xi, CCTV ‘s Finance Channel Director was taken away
by the police on May 31.
After the investigation was launched, Deputy Director Li Yong,
Rui Chenggang and the producer were also taken away
by the police on the afternoon of July 11.

The media recently reported that before the fall of Bo Xilai,
former Party Secretary of Chongqing City, Rui Chenggang
often bragged of his close relationship with BoXilai ‘s son,
Bo Guagua.
They often went overseas to participate in various activities.

Some media also reported that Rui has maintained a very good
relationship with Yu Gang, secretary to Zhou Yongkang,
former Politburo Standing Committee member.

He has also had close relationships with many CCP high ranking
officials, Second-Generation Reds, such as Li Changchun’s
daughter Li Tong, Liu Yunshan ‘s son Liu Lefei,
Zeng Chinghong’s son Zeng Wwei, etc.
They often got together to drink.

On the other hand, Rui Chenggang was associated closely
with Zeng Qinghong ‘s younger brother Zeng Qinghuai,
who controlled CCTV ‘s Art Center behind the scenes

Media quoted informed people in CCTV as saying,
“Rui Chenggang is associated with many high ranking officials
and is very powerful."

In his autobiography, he also stressed
that connection is very important in China,.

Ma Xiaoming, former Shaanxi TV editor:
“Actually, it ‘s not so, as all institutions in China are CCP tools.
There ‘s no need for them to be affiliated to the CCP,
because what they should do is follow its orders.
That is, they are CCP ‘s obedient and controlled
propaganda tools.
CCTV is one of the CCP’s main propaganda tools."

Following the investigation against Zhou Yongkang in early
December last year, there have been many managers, anchors,
reporters, etc. in CCTV under investigation.

Guo Zhengxi is widely regarded as a confidant of CCTV
former deputy director Li Dongsheng, and Li Dongsheng was
a principal assistant to Zhou Yongkang.

In another news report,
Rui Chenggang was once involved in the establishment
of “Beijing Pegasus Public Relationship Consulting Pte Ltd"
and was its longstanding shareholder.
This company once provided planning and executive services
for CCTV financial channel ‘s “Davos Forum".
In 2007, international public relations giant “Edelman"
purchased “Pegasus".

CCTV ‘s internal information also revealed that Rui Chenggang
charged systematically for his services, basing his price
on the status of the interviewee, on whether they are the head
or high officials of foreign countries,
on which Chinese officials they have met in their visit,
and the duration of their appearance on CCTV.
Some say that Rui Chenggang wields power in the left hand
and wealth in the right hand.

Ma Xiaoming: “This incident is a good reflection
of the CCP ‘s unrestricted use of power.
There are no restrictions and no bottom-line.
Everyone has the desire to corrupt.
When this desire is indulged without restriction and control,
without legal and public scrutiny, it will expand indefinitely,
and result inevitably in corruption and depravity.

When Rui Chenggang was under investigation, there were
more detractors than sympathizers in the public sphere.
The biggest controversy created by Rui Chenggang centered
around his comments on nationalism.
For instance, when the previous China based US ambassador
Gary Locke sat in “Economy Class",
Rui Chenggang questioned if he was reminding everyone
that the US owed China money.
He also compared international basketball star Yaoming ‘s
income to a Communist official ‘s salary.
The most controversial episode related to his inquiry
to US President Obama “on behalf of Asia".

Jiao Guobiao, Associate Professor of the Academy of News
and Communications, Peking University:
“This child (Rui Chenggang) is intelligent and has a good
knowledge base.
But media in China is run by political power.
Because his heart has corrupted, he is willing to enter
this dirty arena to share in its spoils.
His perspectives on life and the world
are entirely built on the wrong foundation.
That is why he grew into a very strange tree."

The author of essay, “The depravity of soft power",
Ting Laifeng commented on Rui Chenggang.
He said, “He (Rui Chenggang) was neither a tiger nor a fly,
but a carp in murky waters.
He enjoyed steady success, and thought he was safe.
But unknown to him, he has fallen into the abyss of power
together with all those that he has ever sucked up to."
