Mainland Chinese Longing To Be Taiwanese

On October 10, was marked the 101 Anniversary
of the Republic of China’ (ROC; Taiwan).
Taiwan’s people launched activities
to celebrate their National Day.
Not only Taiwan residents, but many tourists and students
from mainland China went to Taipei’s Presidential Palace.
Meanwhile, Taiwan students reportedly displayed
the national flag of ROC in Nanjing, China.
For the mainland Chinese, what is actually
the true meaning of the “Republic of China?”
Taiwan’s passport is being granted with visa-free status
in more and more countries, and mainland netizens express wishes to become ROC citizens.

As the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will put it,
the ROC is a term of the past.
ROC has been overthrown and Taiwan
is “a part of People’s Republic of China (PRC).”
Yet, in Taiwan even children know that the “Blue Sky
with a White Sun” flag is the national flag of ROC.
On October 10, ROC’s National Day, 11 University students
from Taiwan took a group photo in front of the Presidential Palace in Nanjing, China.
They were holding a big national ROC flag,
with some of them holding small ones in their hands.

Taiwan’s media reported that this national ROC flag photo
has been widely spreading on the mainland microblogs.
However, the picture was removed
hastily that same night.

Fan Shiping, Politics’ Professor at National Taiwan Normal
University, analyzes society and politics in PRC and ROC.
In his late article, he wrote that the mainland Chinese
people now have a new understanding of the ROC.
Prof. Fan says that the mainland Chinese surprisingly
discover now that they have been long deceived by the CCP’s education about history.
The CCP-led Eighth Route Army actions during the 2nd
Sino-Japanese War were actually inflated and prettified.
A rise in the sentiment of nostalgia towards the ROC
has recently become popular in mainland China.
In the ROC era, freedom of speech, pluralism of ideas,
moral education are all in sharp contrast with the tyranny and the collapse of moral values in today’

Zhang Weiguo, chief editor of The Trend magazine
in Hong Kong, comments on the issue.
He says, the CCP has inculcated the Chinese people with
its communist ideology in a series of political movements.
In particular, the Cultural Revolution has eroded
the Chinese below the moral base line.
The traditional Chinese culture, treated as bourgeois
enemies, have been utterly ruined.
Zhang Weiguo thinks that today’s Chinese people
are immersed in the toxins of CCP’s culture.

Zhang Weiguo: “After the communist culture brainwashing
generations of Chinese people, the society has now turned into what it is today.
Rampant counterfeiting, hogwash oil, melamine pollution.
This is actually destructive to the entire human civilization.”

Professor Fan Shiping remarked that Taiwan was included
in the US Visa Waiver Program, becoming its 37th member, with ROC being the only non-diplomatic ally of the US.
With that, so far 129 countries have granted Taiwan with
visa-free or visa-on-arrival status, though Taiwan has only 23 diplomatic allies globally.
In contrast, 172 countries have set up diplomatic relations
with the PR China.
Yet only 32 countries have offered PRC a visa-free status,
mainly from developing countries, like East Timor.
Mainland netizens said, “The ROC passport is still better!”
“We should find ways to become ROC citizens!"

Teacher Guo (in mainland China): “Taiwan had
previously exposed a tainted drugs’ scandal.
The authorities made a thorough investigation
and all tainted drugs were pulled from the shelves!
If such a thorough probe could be done into mainland’s
tainted foods, there’ll be few foods left for us to eat.
The authorities can’t supervise even the quality of our food,
how can we expect them to do well in governing us?”

Zhang Weiguo compared civilians’ behavior under the rule
of the different political system of PRC and ROC.

Zhang Weiguo: “Besides making loud noise about overseas
problems, all they do is use intrigues against each other.
They know how to dig their ways into the CCP’ system,
for personal gains only, while not paying attention to morals.
It’s the opposite with people from Hong Kong and Taiwan.
They’re able to quickly blend in local societies.
While learning Western civilization, they can well
intertwine it with the traditional Chinese culture.”

A mainland netizen posted, Taiwan has democratic politics.
Taiwan’s ruling party has to step down if failing to do well, thus Taiwan’s people have a very good quality of life!

Netizen “Bengbu qianjin” (mainland China): “There’s no
control of current mainland Chinese leaders’ corruption.
For the sake of privileges for themselves and their families,
and for their own interests, they are sacrificing the future of the Chinese nation!"

The netizen appealed to the CCP leaders to gradually
lift bans on elections and build democratic political system.
In its post the netizen says, this is what average Chinese
citizens will truly voice out, if they are allowed to do so.
