Audience Left in Protest at Global Times Editor´s Talk

Global Times is a much criticized Communist regime official
media.

Its editor Hu Xijin recently gave a talk at Chinese University of
Hong Kong.

He claimed that he represents the 1.3 billion Chinese.

He expressed his loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
and stressed the CCP interests are the people´s interests.

In the audience, a human rights lawyer confronted Hu Xijin´s
talk and a professor protested by leaving with his shoes in his hands.

On April 1, Global Times editor Hu Xijin gave a talk at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong about
the mainland media´s change and reflection.

According to Hong Kong’s Ming Pao News, Hu introduced
Global Times (GT) not as an official media but a market media
with big circulation, and owned by two bosses,
the government and the market.

He said, “I have served both bosses quite well.”

Hu Xijing claimed that GT shares the view of the public.

However, as a realist, he said the media can not divorce from
political reality.

In the Q & A session, Prof. Chow Po Chung from Department of
Government & Public Administration expressed that he had paid
attention to Mr. Hu´s talk, which consisted largely that the party´s
interests are the people´s interests and that he represents the 1.3 billion
people.

Prof. Chung asked those in the audience who did not agree to raise their
hands. More than half of the audience did.

Right after that, Prof. Chung took off his shoes in protest and
left the audience.

Former editor of Hebei People’s Radio Zhu Xinxin believes
the protest of the audience is showing the dissatisfaction towards
the CCP behind Hu Xijin.

Zhu Xinxin, former editor of Hebei People’s Radio: “People such
as Hu Xijin in the CCP system will never speak their true thoughts.

They are the so-called speculators.

His talk caters to the official statement and completely exposes
him as a tool with an identity of a marionette."

Beijing commentator Zha Jianguo: “There is a major split in the
Chinese about the CCP.

As a free society, Hong Kong sees it clearly as the violation
by the CCPof human rights and freedom."

In the audience, Beijing human rights lawyer Teng Biao asked
Hu Xijin: “If the party and the people’s interests are one,
why would the CCP not dare to be open about opinions?” and
“How to explain the June 4 massacre, the incidents such as
Falun Gong, Xu Zhiyong and so forth?"

Teng Biao also asked Hu to respond to the netizens mocking Hu
as the go fetch dog of the CCP.

Hu Xijin responded that problems are inevitable during
development, however, relaxation of censorship is something China
“cannot afford."

Zha Jianguo criticizes that to face the issues such as the
June 4 massacre and the Falun Gong, and to open the discussion,
it is the CCP, not China, who cannot afford it.

Zha Jianguo: “It is the Communist Party of China that cannot
afford it.

The people are the owners of China. The owners are free to speak,
why would China not afford it? It is the CCP who cannot afford it."

Zhu Xinxin indicates open media and open speech will lead to
the collapse of the CCP right away because of its evil history and
presence.

Zhu Xinxin: “It is completely made of lies and deceit.

The dirty history and ugly reality will instantly ruin its rule.

Free speech is terrifying to them.
It will only expose their filthy acts and talk."

The Global Times, led by Hu Xijin, has served as a platform for
the CCP and has been ridiculed as a “go fetch dog.”

Its opinion article, “The media should be the national interest
watchdog," was dubbed by netizens as the “party watchdog."

Why would the organizers invite Hu Xijin to talk?

The Service Center for China Studies Director Joseph Man Chan
said Mr. Hu represents the Chinese media and
reflects the Chinese power in debate.
