ATV’s Investor Investigated

Hong Kong’s Asian TV (ATV) was the first to report
the “death" of Jiang Zemin, former president of
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority (HKBA) has
so far received 41 complaints about the issue.
As a result, HKBA decided to investigate ATV’s main investor
Wang Zheng, in relationship to ATV’s management authorities.

Last month, ATV was the first to report the death of
former CCP president Jiang Zemin.
18 hours after the news was released,

the CCP’s official media, Xinhua News,
released an article in English denying Jiang’s death.
Although ATV quickly withdrew its report,
the CCP criticized ATV and the China Liaison Office.

On August 1, HKBA announced that it had received
41 complaints about ATV, which were being looked into.
Due to the public’s attention on Wang Zheng’s relationship
to ATV’s management authorities,
HKBA has decided to investigate him on this issue.

An editor of Hong Kong’s Open Magazine, Cai Yongmei, said
that Wang’s father and stepfather are both CCP senior officials.
Hong Kong people believe that with such a background,

Wang’s control of ATV’s reporting and management
might go against Hong Kong’s public interests.
Therefore, people are concerned.

Cai Yongmei, “Hong Kong only has two free TV channels.
One is ATV and the other is Television Broadcasts Limited.
Since a TV station has a huge impact on the mass media,

if its background is connected to an outside political force,
I believe it will have a considerable effect on Hong Kong.

Wang Zheng is reported to be the son of
one the CCP’s founders, Shu Tong.
Wang Zheng’s last name follows his mother’s side.

Wang’s mother Wang Yunfei is the granddaughter of
Sheng Xuanhuai, “the Father of China’s modern industry."
Wang Yunfei is also a cousin of Wang Yeping,
Jiang Zemin’s wife.
People believe that without Wang’s permission, no staff
of ATV would dare report Jiang’s death before the CCP did.
Wang Zheng later denied his involvement, saying that
he learned about Jiang’s death after watching a news report.

Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported on August 2 that

in September 2010, HKBA approved businessman
Wong Ben Koon’s purchase of 52% of ATV’s shares.
But the report didn’t mention Wang Zheng, who later admitted
in an interview, that Wong was his distant relative.
Also, the dispute between Taiwanese merchant Tsai Eng-meng,
and ATV’s 2nd largest stockholder, Payson Cha, is not resolved.
Tsai believes that Wang’s background, which helped him
become an authority at ATV, needs to be reconsidered.

In terms of the principle of “objective and fair reporting" in
ordinary TV media, Cai Yongmei said that
after the British transferred Hong Kong back to China in 1997,
the mainland’s “hidden rules” also permeated Hong Kong.

Cai Yongmei: “ATV dares report because it has a precedent:
it reported the death of Deng Xiaoping before.
With information gathered from Beijing authorities,
ATV reported the news before any other media.
So perhaps ATV’s report follows the same working model."

However, no matter how hard the Beijing authorities
try to refute the rumor,
Chinese people are sharing the good news
about Jiang Zemin’s death and expressing their joy.
Among other things, they are celebrating by lighting fireworks.
Some Chinese netizens also expressed their joy on Facebook.
By 8:30 p.m., on July 6, over 2,000 people joined

“The preparatory committee for the celebration of
Jiang Zemin’s death in all social circles."
