Bo Xilai’s Influence Is Waning

For the past several days, Bo Xilai,
the Communist Communist Party (CCP) secretary of Chongqing,
has been trying to woo Deng Ken, the younger brother of
Deng Xiaoping and Hu Jinxing, who is also the cousin
of the current CCP president, Hu Jintao, to lend him support.
Analysts say that this shows Bo is now grasping at straws due to his utterly embarrassing singing the red songs and suppressing mafia campaign. By getting Hu and Deng’s relatives involved, Bo hopes to revive his reputation and his ill-fated political campaign.
But this only serves to expose the fact that he has been relegated to the sidelines.
WikiLeaks disclosed the fact that no one inside the CCP speaks for
Bo Xilai, thus his situation is becoming increasingly tenuous.

On October 6, the Chongqing Daily, which is a mouthpiece
of the Municipal CCP Committee,
published an interview with Hu Jinxing,
the cousin of President Hu Jintao Hu.
The report praised Hu Jinxing for his high rating of Chongqing official policies,
including project for people’s well-being and the campaign
of singing red songs and surpressing the mafia.
According to the report, Hu Jinxing believed that
Chongqing authorities seized the essence of
“serving the people wholeheartedly, and praised
its scientific outlook on local development with an emphasis on putting people first.”

Hu Jinxing, Chairman of the Shanghai Morelove Foundation,
performs charitable activities such as aiding improvised students
and the disabled. In 2005, he was principal of the Experimental School,
which is affiliated with the Shanghai International Studies University.
Before that, he was the principal of the Shanghai Fuxing High School.

When Hu Jinxing attended the 11th Annual Meeting of
National History on September 28, he was interviewed
by the Chongqing Daily.

Jiang Weiping, the former northeast office director
of the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po newspaper, said
that Bo has his sights on becoming a Standing Committee member
of the 18th CCP Congress. Since he cannot get Hu Jintao
to give him an invitation, Hu’s cousin could serve as a temporary option.
According to the interview, the newspaper seemed to refer to Hu Jinxing as the CCP general secretary instead of the chairman of a non-governmental organization.

Wu Fan, editor-in-chief of the magazine, Chinese Affairs,
said that Bo’s real purpose is to seize power.

Wu Fan, editor-in-chief of the magazine, Chinese Affairs:
“Bo’s purpose is to seize power.
His claim of wanting to speak up for and serve all civilians,
is not true. Everything he has said was done for himself,
to gain political power. Bo has been constantly seeking power.
That is why he started the campaign of singing red songs and
surpressing the mafia, as well as promoting communism and
returning to the Cultural Revolution.
Everyone sees right through him.”

On November 20, 2010, at the invitation of Hu Jinxing,
two factions of scholars in Shanghai,
including left-wing scholars represented by Zhang Hongliang,
and right-wing scholars represented by Xiao Gongqin,
held a seminar on the Chongqing Model.

In an Asia Week article titled,
Shanghai Seminar on Chongqing Model Incites Controversy,
experts attending the seminar expressed their concerns
over the erosion of the rule of law and the recurrence of Cultural Revolution-style politics. Xiao Gongqin, a professor at Shanghai Normal University
appeared to be keen on reviving the Cultural Revolution.

Xiao Gongqin is considered the main representative of
neo-authoritarianism scholars in China. At the seminar,
he said that the Chongqing Model is utilizing the CCP’s
resources of political heritage and revolutionary culture
to strengthen government forces.
The campaign of singing red songs and surpressing
the mafia, if without constraint or rule of law,
and as such it is sure to cause huge problems down the road.

Lin Baohua, the Current Affairs Commentator:
“Bo Xilai is taking advantage of Hu Jintao’s cousin.
A similar thing happened before when Bo invitated Deng Ken,
the younger brother of Deng Xiaoping, to made an inscription.
I believe that what they said in the interview was just
their personal opinions, not something said on behalf of Hu Jintao
or the CCP Central Committee.”

One day before the interview was made public, the Chongqing Daily
published Deng Ken’s inscription to Bo Xilai, which praised
the campaign of singing red songs and surpressing the mafia,
as well as 12 approaches to achieve common prosperity, etc.

Jiang Weiping said that in the past, that Bo benefited
from Jiang Zemin’s protection, and seldom made mention of
Hu Jintao in public. But since the news of Jiang’s death,
Bo has addressed Hu Jintao as “Comrade Jintao" and
“Prime Minister Jiabao." On the other hand,
he carefully plotted to buy off, at all costs,
aging Deng Ken and his like,
to put on an act, which only lends creadance to Bo’s wild ambitions.

A U.S. diplomatic cable recently released by WikiLeaks
reveals that in order to attend the Central Committee of the
17th CCP Congress, Bo went to many provinces to
make political advances towards local officials.
After Bo Yibo, the father of Bo Xilai, died, no high-level CCP
official spoke about the father. In particular, Bo Yibo helped to
remove CCP reformist factions like Hu Yaobang and
Zhao Ziyang, making Bo Xilai trapped in a plight.

Jiang Weiping believes that Bo Xilai’s influence has waned
due to his launching of the singing red songs and
surpressing the mafia campaign. By attempting to revive the
Cultural Revolution Red Storm, Bo wants to gain political control.
But his plot has been seen through by almost everyone.
He has become a minority inside the CCP
so nobody believes his slogan of common prosperity.
Bo is trapped in a very tenuous situation.
