Zheng Enchong Case In Progress

China’s civil rights lawyer, Zheng Enchong, has been under house arrest for over seven years. Recently, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities suddenly approved Zheng’s academic travel to Hong Kong. In May, NTD reported on Zheng’s urgent meeting with a U.S. diplomat in Shanghai. After NTD broadcast this news, the CCP central authorities asked Shanghai authorities for information on Zheng. On June 2, Meng Jianzhu, the chief of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee (PLAC), arrived in Shanghai to inspect work. Zheng Enchong speculates that Meng may come to find out about his case, in order to prepare for Xi Jinping’s talk with Barack Obama next week.

On May 27, NTD reported that Russell Menyhart, US diplomat in Shanghai, urgently met with Zheng Enchong. Menyhart said he would write a report on Zheng’s situation, which will be used as information for the US-China human rights dialogue held in July. Two days later, a Shanghai police officer complained about Zheng, and that Zheng “has diffused the situation".

Zheng Enchong: “The police told me that even Xi Jinping knew about this matter. He said, that after your meeting with the US diplomat, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the relevant central departments, all asked for the information about you. We dare not report to them about your situation."

On May 30, at the U.S. State Department daily press briefing, a reporter asked if Zheng’s successful meeting with the US diplomat was related to the upcoming Obama-Xi talk. State Department spokesman Saci said that she could not come to this conclusion, nor would she comment on China’s motives.

Zheng Enchong speculates that the news about his meeting with the US diplomat, as well as the US reporter’s question, may have drawn attention from Xi and his men.

The CCP Foreign Affairs Ministry is now preparing for Xi’s talk with Obama. According to Zheng, they are predicting what topics may be raised, and how Xi will respond.

On June 2, Meng Jianzhu, the PLAC Party chief, reportedly arrived in Shanghai to inspected work. Zheng Enchong thinks the timing of Meng’s Shanghai trip was too coincidental.

Zheng Enchong:"After NTD and SOH reported the news, it is believed that Xi Jinping is certainly aware. Now it has been raised at the US State Dept press briefing.

So based on my analysis, Meng Jianzhu has now come to Shanghai to check it out personally. Why did they put me under house arrest for seven years, since I was released from prison in 2006? It seems that the central authorities have known nothing about my case."

Zheng Enchong discloses that he had continued to expose corruption of Jiang Zemin’s Shanghai clique. Jiang thus vowed to remove Zheng, and put him as number one on the list of surveillance targets in Shanghai.

Zheng Enchong:"I was persecuted by Wu Zhiming, Jiang’s nephew. Wu is current chairman of Shanghai Committee for the Political Consultative Conference. The central PLAC definitely knows about my case, but they usually leave it to Shanghai PLAC to handle. That is, they let Shanghai PLAC straighten things out, by allowing me to go to Hong Kong. But before they could handle it, the news about my meeting with the US diplomat has spread widely. The central PLAC will have to make the final decision.

Also they fear that after I go abroad, I will criticize the CCP in public. So Meng feels that he can’t bear the responsibility."

Zheng Enchong adds that after NTD broadcast the news, he received SMS text messages from Chinese lawyers. One of them was a self-proclaimed “doormat".

Zheng Enchong: “They congratulated me. They felt that I had one got one back for China’s civil rights lawyers, as ‘no one has spoken out for us doormat lawyers’. He said they felt encouraged that the issue was raised as a topic for the US-China human rights dialogue."

Zheng Enchong remarks that the U.S. is now paying much attention to the condition of Chinas civil rights lawyers. The CCP also views these lawyers as a great threat.

Lawyer Zheng says that if China’s civil rights lawyers can stick together to be a powerful force, he believes that large pro-democracy demonstrations will soon take place in China, as they did in Taiwan.
