U.S. Expects Nothing from the Upcoming Xi Jinping’s Visit

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping will visit the U.S. next week.

In general, the U.S. doesn’t expect any major achievement
to come out of the visit.
They predict Xi’s visit to likely be unpleasant due to big
contradictions over Syria, Tibet as well as Wang Lijun’s issue between U.S. and China.

The experts from the Washington think tank “The Center for
Strategic and International Studies” said in a seminar on Thursday,
Xi Jinping’s US trip which will take next week
is only a “get-to-know-you” trip to for U.S. leaders.
Also, the outside world should not expect much from this trip.

Despite a number of important bilateral, regional and
global issues needing to be discussed between U.S. and China,
solving specific problems is not the aim of Xi Jinping’s U.S. visit.

For him, the most important thing is to not making a mistake
during the visit.

Last Saturday, China and Russia vetoed the UN Security
Council’s Syria Resolution aimed at stopping the violence in Syria,
which caused strong condemnation from western
countries including the U.S.
Now, the U.K. has withdrawn their ambassador and the U.S.
closed its embassy in Syria.

Cui Tiankai, the Vice Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs
said even with the disputes in Syria and Tibet, as well as
trade issues between the U.S. and China, overall bilateral
relations will continue to improve.

Wu Fan, a political commentator thinks that the minister of
China Ministry of Foreign Affairs is talking nonsense.

Wu Fan: “Hillary Clinton, the secretary of the United States
Commented that (China and Russia) did a foolish thing.
The U.S. ambassador to the UN gave even heavier handed
comments, saying that (China and Russia) are killing Syrians.
With these kind of words, how can the China-U.S.
relationship improve?
The Chinese Foreign Minister is talking nonsense and
others will challenge him.”

Wu Fan said the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) uses
violence that goes against “universal values" in dealing with Syria, Tibet and so on.
Western countries may ignore the CCP’s vote in order to
resolve the issue directly, the same as they did during the Libya issues.
These will be the questions which Xi Jinping can’t avoid.

Wu Fan: “One issue is Syria, another is Tibet, and then there
is the escape of Wang Lijun, which is related to Bo Xilai.
Xi must be questioned on those issues.

Definitely, he will do a detailed preparation to answer why
China vetoed the UN decision, and why suppresses Tibet.
Xi will give some simple answers to indicate the position of
the CCP. He won’t be break away from the CCP’s stance.
Of course, these problems may embarrass him,
but he has to face questioning.
He will deliver his explanation, but American will
not find it acceptable.”

Derek Scissors, a research fellow in the Washington based
Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation said that
the CCP should feel happy because U.S. isn’t going to fuss
over the issue of Wang Lijun during Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit.
Wu Fan pointed out that this is the American hospitality.

However, Chinese officials didn’t behave so politely.

The Voice of America reported from Beijing that,”just before
Xi Jinping’s US trip, some CCP officials said in the future,
China will act more and more based on its own interests,
no matter whether this will anger other countries.”
