Ability to Comment on Microblogs has been Restored but Chinese Communists still Strike Netizens Hard

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) initiated a crackdown on internet speech. 16 websites were shut down. Commenting on the microblogs of Sina.com and qq.com
was suspended for three days. Beijing police arrested over 1,000 suspects and deleted over 208,000 internet postings in the name of cracking down on internet crimes. On April 3, microblog commenting functions had been restored, but use of sensitive words was still limited. Netizens joked, “we are used to being banned
from commenting.” In Chinese, this is read as xijinping, which was also used
as a pun on the name of the Chinese vice Chairman, Xi Jinping. The phrase “xijinping” quickly became a sensitive word. There are reports that some netizens were arrested.

Guangzhou businessman, Wu Guancong, was arrested by Beijing police for forwarding posts that said, “the four henchman of Jiang Zenmin, namely Bo Xilai, Zhou Yongkang, Jia Qinglin and Li Changchun are shaking.” He was arrested and detained for “causing trouble.”

On March 31, of the 5 netizens who were protesting on street, one was criminally detained, two were detained, and the other two went missing.

One of the five netizens, Xiaojuan told NTD, that he decided to protest and demand fairness, justice, freedom and democracy when he heard another netizen had been arrested for showing support for Wen Jiaobao’s political reform on microblogs.

Guangzhou Netizen Xiaojuan: “A young man said that he was arrested and detained yesterday (March 30). He was just released at noon today. He did not oppose anything. He just said he supports Wen Jiabao’s political reform.

He said we should do something for the sake of our future generation. I was moved by his spirit. I originally planned to go mountain climbing. Then we decided to hold banners to protest. I thought that holding banners was not a big deal. We didn’t do anything to harm others.”

In addition, Netizen “Qiaofu,” who has frequently exposed the internal struggle between high level ranking Communist Party officials, said on Twitter that the Xinhua news agency has published an article disclosing data regarding the arrest of netizens on a mass scale by the CCP. The disclosed data has had a great impact overseas.

The Xinhua News Agency panicked and immediately deleted the article. Zhou Yongkang responded that the number of people arrested is not enough. He wants to arrest more and totally eliminate opposing views.

Netizen “Qiaofu” told a Boxun reporter on April 4, that in order to arrest him, the CCP had interrogated over 500 people three days prior, arrested dozens, and tortured many in order to force them to admit that they are the real “Qiaofu.” “Qiaofu” believes that there will be more people targeted in the next few days.

Although Sina.com and qq.com resumed its commenting service, many netizens criticized them for shutting down the commenting service. Some netizens mocked the three day ban by saying it resulted in speedy information dissemination,
a sharp increase in forwarded postings, quicker rumor spreading, rumor refuting became harder;finally, it is ineffective to manage websites by implicating the crimes with innocent people; the opposing effect of the ban is greater than its intended effect, so the ban will become a historical joke.”

Some netizens joked, “We are used to being banned from commenting with xi jin ping. We don’t bother to comment anymore.” The phrase “xi jin ping” now has become a sensitive word.

Zhu Xinxin: “Their methods will only stirr up people’s resentment and distrust towards the regime. The more they do so, the more hostile people become.

Ordinary citizens like to spread and believe in adverse news about the CCP. Why? Because people do not trust and are not satisfied with the CCP’s tyrannical rule.”

The chief editor of Hong Kong’s “Dongxiang” magazine, Zhang Weiguo said,
whether it’s shutting down microblog commenting or blocking websites and arresting people, they are all a habit of the CCP’s tyranny.”

Zhang Weiguo: “The CCP has always been very afraid of news media and internet media. Especially in the recent times, the public opinion reflected on the internet reveals the internal power struggle of the Communist Party. So the CCP feels even more threatened. The CCP has always used public deception as a ruling tool.”

The Vice Dean of the Law School at University of Political Science and Law in China, He Bin, also criticized the Chinese Communist censorship and their practice of arresting people. He said if microblogs are to be blocked for posting sensitive comments, then all comments should be deleted, including government work reports.
