Strong Support for Hong Kong Students’ 5 Day Strike

The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) have been on
a mass 5 day strike boycotting classes since Sept. 22.
They are protesting China’s top legislative body’s rejecting
long promised “genuine universal suffrage"
in the 2017 elections for Hong Kong’s next leaders.

The strike has been seeing widespread solidarity
in academic circles.
On the first day of strike,
tens of thousands of students participated in the rally.
The Hong Kong government has also responded to the strike.

“Put down the books, refuse to give in!"
On Sept. 22, a strike for universal suffrage sponsored
by the HKFS began on Baiwan road
at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The HKFS says that the strike’s rally had more than 13,000
participants after just two hours.
Many of the student protesters wore white shirts
and yellow ribbons.
They made their stage and hung banners saying
“strike protest" from the famous Gate of Wisdom sculpture.
They also displayed banners saying, “independent fate",
expressing their decision to fight for democracy
and universal suffrage.

The HKFS’ Secretary-General Zhou Yongkang gave
a speech for strike at the stage.
He said the National People’s Congress Standing Committee
(NPCSC)’s resolution on political reform has given China’s
capital and financial groups monopoly over the Nomination
Committee; all policies are biased towards large financial
groups, resulting in the wealth gap in Hong Kong to become
“the world’s greatest".

Zhou stressed four strike requirements on behalf of the HKFS.

He stressed that the strike is the first in a series of
non-cooperation movements;
the strike is the students’ refusal
to sit on the sidelines.
He called on the Hong Kong people
to insist on the principles and reject the reform package.
He also said they will consider extending the strike
if there is no response from the government.

As the protest went on, teachers also appeared,
with banners saying “I am a teacher, I support the strike"
and went onstage voicing their support of the student strike.

A government spokesman said the government will hold
a short term political reform consultation in respect of
the students’ pursuit of democratic ideals
and students’ caring about the social affairs.

Zhang Chengjue, Hong Kong writer:
“It will be long term for such fight.
They need great fortitude or be very steady,
not large scale, but continuous. This would be very good.
Don’t expect too much and or look at it too unrealistically."

The students’ strike has received the support of academics.

So far, 382 university teachers have voiced support
and stressed that students are the hope of Hong Kong, and that
they won’t leave them alone to face “the white terror".

In addition to voicing solidarity, 108 scholars said that
they will teach at the protest site during the strike.
In addition, 17 assistants from Zhongshan University’s
Physics Department also formed a “strike teaching aid group"
to help the students protesters catch up with schoolwork.

Zhang Chengjue: “Hong Kong professors and teachers are able
to adhere to universal values, which can be said to be the core
values of Hong Kong.

They safeguard the right to academic freedom
and citizens freedom.
They are very dissatisfied with the various barriers Beijing
authorities have made to the 2017 general elections.
They say no to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
by supporting students in action."

Additionally, a group of graduates gathered in Tamar Park
to support student strike the day before strike began.

Jiawei Chen, head of China Human Rights Lawyers Concern
Group: “Hong Kong has a great force of support for having
genuine universal suffrage, as people don’t want a preselected
and undemocratic nomination procedure.
You can’t say all the teachers and students support the strike;
but a great number of teachers and students request complete
universal suffrage."

On the same day of the strike, Hong Kong industry and
commerce delegations met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The delegations were led by the vice-chairman of China’s
National Political Consultative Conference Tung Chee-hwa,
who is the former Hong Kong Chief Executive.

They didn’t mention Hong Kong political reform; but only
reiterated to adhere to one country two systems and Basic Law.

Zhang Chengjue: “The CCP will not give way. If they allow
universal suffrage in Hong Kong, the chain reaction from
Guangdong or the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong will cause
incredible problems."

However, Hong Kong media say that the strike will not bring
Hong Kong true universal suffrage or make the CCP give away.
But the student movement can always
plant the seeds of change little by little.
