Haimen: More Protests with Uncertain Future

After the “Wukan incident”, another protest took place
in Haimen Town, Chaoyang District of Shantou.
On the afternoon of December 25, people were still gathering
on the town square, asking for the arrested villagers’ release.
Some villagers were worried whether the authorities’ promise
of suspending the power plant construction will be carried out.
Thus they made an online appeal for a large-scale assembly
on the New Year’s Day.

Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily reported,
that the demonstration incidents have not calmed down yet.
In the Haimen incident, dozens of people were arrested,
including a wounded student, but only two were released.
At 2 pm on December 25, people began to gather
on the square before the town government buildings.
At 3:30 pm, the number of the gathering people
reached nearly a thousand.
Many policemen in plain clothes have mixed
among the crowd and took pictures.
The government also sent out a lot of staff
to advise people to leave.
The authorities offered family members to visit the arrested,
however the relatives declined the offer.

In addition, some villagers called online for a large-scale
gathering on the New Year’s Day, to continue the pressure.
They are worried that the authorities’ promise to suspend
the construction of the power plant might not be fulfilled.

At the same time, Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP)
official media is intentionally downplaying the incident.

However, the incidents of Wakan and Haimen’s protesting
have attracted the attention of global media.
US-based political commentator Chen Pokong said,
the wave of democratization in North Africa and the Middle East makes CCP fearful.
Therefore, CCP chose concession measures for Wukan
and Haimen, as to temporarily calm people down.
Chen Pokong reminded the public to beware of the
possibility for CCP to retaliate later.

Chen Pokong: “For example, they agreed to release
the representatives of the villagers.
However, they kept open the option of releasing them first
and putting them on trial later.
Plus, the authorities recognized the temporary committee
organization set up by the villagers, but for 3 months only.
After the problem of the land is dealt with,
the committee will be dismissed.
So their concession still has boundaries,
what’s more, they attached strings to it too.”

Li Feng, Party Secretary of CCP in Shantou City,
has not appeared in public for a while.
He was not seen since he went to Shenzhen to attend
the Fifth Chao Business Conference on December 17.
Zheng Renhao, the acting mayor of Shantou,
went to Haimen to hold a forum last week.
He said he was entrusted with his duties by Li Feng,
but didn’t reveal Li’s whereabouts.

Hong Kong’s Apple Daily comments that it’s not normal
for a politician to not appear in public for a long time.
The article speculates that he might have gone to learn
in CCP’s Central Party School, or he is in a poor health.
Whatever the reason,
Li Feng is avoiding the limelight.

Li Feng had always talked
about the “Shantou prosperity."
He closely followed the manner of “Guangdong prosperity”
by Wang Yang, CCP’s Secretary of Guangdong Province.
Li Feng mentioned that there are complicated social interests
and serious deep-seated contradictions in Shantou.
Therefore, it is necessary to get rid of various
destabilizing factors in their bud stage.
Many people in Shantou can not accept Li Feng. A group,
named “Li Feng, get out of Shantou” appeared on Sina weibo.

Haimen residents expressed their concerns about the health
of the over 100 thousand people living in Haimen Town.
Up to 70% of them suffer from some form of cancer due to
the power plant discharging wastewater and polluting the sea.
At present, the villagers can not rely on the income of fishing
to lead a normal life. And their lives are getting more difficult.

Haimen resident: “In the whole region of Shantou,
the cancer cases have gone up.
In our town alone, they went from 200 cases to 70% of
our population being affected.”

This villager said that the local government
agreed to suspend the construction of the plant.
But the three arrested villagers are not released yet. Thus now
the demands are to release them and to stop building the plant.

In addition, some netizens sent out a letter for help.

The letter states that netizens Nuowei Senlin, Xiucai Jianghu,
and few others went to Lufeng, Guangdong to support Wukan.
On December 21, they were taken away by the local security,
without more information on them being released.
Thus there are online calls to spread this news, as well as
to join the large-scale gathering on the New Year’s Day.
