Foreign media focuses on Wang Lijun Case

Rumors are circulating of internal conflict between Bo Xilai,
Chongqing party secretary, and Wang Lijun, police chief.
This has attracted close attention from foreign media.

US State Department confirms Wang entered Chengdu
US consulate on Monday.
This was part of his attempt to obtain political asylum,
but he then left of his own volition.
Later, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed this incident.

Some analysts believe that a political earthquake triggered
by Wang is waiting to start.

Recently, thousands of Chinese people and foreign media
are paying close attention to the Wang Lijun case.
Voice of America reported: facing such “sensitive” incidents,
Chinese authorities usually block the leakage of information.
But this time, uncharacteristically, the authorities are
largely open and let it happen.
This is due to them facing people’s discussion online,
especially the various comments on microblogs.

Then how should we understand this dramatic incident?

French weekly news magazine The Le Point, commented:
“A political upheaval is happening in China.
8 months before a new generation of leadership emerges,
the first crisis happened in Chongqing City.
The huge influence of ‘Wang Lijun case’ might change
China’s political pattern and the Sino-US relationship.”

The Nikkei News said, “As the right-hand man of Bo Xilai,
the Chongqing party secretary,
he had lead the crackdown on crime.
But the rumor about Wang’s corruption might hurt Bo Xilai.”

The Washington Post said, “The mystery surrounding Wang
— whether he actually tried to seek political asylum
and if so, why — gave rise to speculation about
a power struggle in the Communist Party’s top ranks.”

Wang Lijun was the right-hand man of Bo Xilai in the
crackdown campaign.
After Bo became the party secretary in Chongqing City
in December, 2007,
Wang Lijun was transferred from Jinzhou to Chongqing
to be the vice mayor and police chief in June, 2008.

Last week, Wang Lijun was suddenly dismissed from
the position of police chief.
On Feb. 8, official Chongqing news media made a statement
on a microblog.
Due to long-term overwork, Wang is highly stressed and
in poor health. He is now accepting vacation-style treatment.

Some analysts believe that this unusual declaration means
that Wang might have been arrested.
But the earthquake in Chinese politics brought by Wang
might just start.

Wang Lijun’s visit to the US consulate 300 km away at this
critical moment is believed to ask for political asylum. But obviously, he didn’t succeed.
It is said that the Washington government believed that US
won’t approve political asylum for Wang.
They won’t get involved in the power struggle in China.

A reporter in Washington from Taiwan’s BCC reported:

“US knows well about Wang’s record, and believes there’s
no reason to approve his political asylum.
Because Wang had many illegal means in the crackdown
campaign and persecuted Falun Gong.
Wang was accused by Falun Gong practitioners in US,
so there will be more troubles if he comes to US.”

The Le Point weekly news magazine also commented:

“So far, every faction in Chinese Communist Party wants to
place their own force in the leading bodies for next 10 years.
Therefore, Wang Lijun Case has both political and diplomatic
meanings, which are far beyond the person involved.”
