Princelings Control State Enterprise, Media’s High Profile Reporting Draws Speculation
In China, it’s been a trend that the children of Communist Party
leaders hold influential positions in state owned companies.
However, recently, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media
started high profile reporting that Chinese premier’s son
Wen Xuesong has become chairman of China Satellite
Communications Co. Ltd. which is a very rare occurrence.
This act by the Chinese regime has drawn attention
and speculation.
China Satellite Communications Co. Ltd. posted on Feb 20
that the son of Chinese premier Wen Jiabao,
Wen Yunsong was elected as chairman of the board
by the board of directors.
On Feb 17, the Chinese regime’s National Resource Bureau
also announced that Politburo Standing Committee member
Li Changchun’s son Li Huidi will become Deputy General
Manager of China Mobile.
Li Huidi had previously served as assistant to
the company’s president.
These two major personnel changes in state-owned
corporations have highlighted the fact that
the “princelings” control the economic lifeline of
mainland China.
South Carolina State University Business School Professor
Xie Tian said that,
the fact that “princelings” enter Chinese state-owned
companies is already an open secret.
Xie Tian says: “Basically since the so-called reform and
opening up of China, the “princelings” began full-scale entry into state-owned enterprises.
Later, when some state-owned enterprises, and
state assets were privatized, a lot of wealth flew into their hands.
Many former CCP cadres and officials transformed directly
into the company’s chairman and general manager.
These people got a lot of money, directly took a large number of
shares and blatantly grabbed the wealth of the Chinese people.”
Xie Tian pointed out that more than 99% of Chinese
millionaires, and billionaires are “princelings”.
Current CCP General Secretary, President Hu Jintao’s son
Hu Haifeng, served as the chairman of Nuctech,
a company under Tsinghua Tong Fang, and then served as
Communist Party Secretary of Tsinghua Holding,
and is currently director of Tsinghua Yangtze River
Delta Research Institute.
Nuctech was suspected of being involved in
Namibian corruption cases.
Other “princelings” in state-own enterprises include: Li Peng’s
daughter Li Xiaolin who is chairperson of China Electric Power;
Li Peng’s son Li Xiapeng who is the CEO of Huaneng Power;
and former CCP general secretary Jiang Zemin’s son
Jiang Mianheng is in control of the Shanghai branch of China
Network Communications Corporation, Shanghai Airport,
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation
and other companies.
Economic Commentator Cao Yan explained that, there are two
reasons for “princelings” to be in state-own companies.
Cao Yan: “First reason is to wash away connections, when
their parents are in power,
they use their power to run private businesses,
and earn a huge amount of money.
They know that when their parents step down,
they might be punished or forced to give their positions to the children of the next generation of leaders.
They will face these risks. By transferring their money into
state-owned enterprises, they wash clean their wealth, providing themselves a safe channel.
On the other hand, state-owned enterprises allow them
to directly transfer into state officials.”
The Chinese regime’s official media rarely report on these
“princelings”.
However, on Feb 21, CCP mouthpiece Zhongxinshe made
a high-profile report on Wen Yungsong’s promotion to chairman.
The People’s Daily also reported on this.
Xie Tian believes that the Chinese Communist rule is crumbling,
they might be feeling a great urgency.
At the same time, Xie Tian has pointed out that, there is a
very serious split among the CCP’s central leadership.
Xie Tian: “the CCP central leadership torn into many sides.
They each have their own area of control,
their own media influence, and their own control over the Internet,
TV, and can secretly pass information oversea, to attack each other.
Under this background, it’s possible that one side is using this
material to attach Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao.”
Xie Tian believe, to collect more wealth, CCP officials are
now openly grabbing money and power, defining their own sphere of influence.
