Chongqing Delegate’s Press Conference — The Wang’s Case Still a Mystery
On March the 9th, the Chongqing delegation of the
“Two Sessions” had a press conference.
However, at the last minute,
only a handful of journalists were allowed in.
Hundreds of Chinese and foreign media were left out,
which resulted in chaos.
Journalists were asking why the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) had censored the media list.
In addition, the CCP had black listed those who had been given
press accreditation to the press conference.
Bo Xilai, the Chongqing party chief,
and Huang Qifan answered questions about Wang Lijun.
But the reason why Wang had fled to the US
Consulate is still unclear.
On March 7th, the former Beijing Haidian district candidates
of the National People’s Congress (NPC), Ye Jinghuan and Han Ying, went to the Beijing Guest Hotel.
They had planned to hand in their proposal of “publicizing
representatives’ contact details and setting up a regular surgery”.
However, they couldn’t meet any National People’s Congress
(NPC) representatives, and instead got detained.
They were verbally abused and beaten up by the police.
They were told by the police that it is against the law to
visit representatives to tell them of one’s problems.
One should directly go to the appeal’s office instead.
The South China mass protests echoed Beijing’s Two Sessions
The Guangdong protests of the Hexia village of Pinghai city,
Huidong County, are still on the rise.
On March 3rd villagers used four coffins to block the road
to a construction site, but it was later cleared by the armed forces.
The village is still surrounded by hundreds of armed forces.
In the early hours of March 7th, the police came down on the
village, breaking into people’s homes and arresting people.
Five human rights activists from the village got detained.
In the morning of March 8th, hundreds of villagers marched
to the local council.
They were holding banners wearing red scarves and
shouting slogans as: “Return our villagers, return our land, return our justice.”
The Pinghai city officials had sold the Hexia villager’s
farmland illegally.
The villagers had staged protests and
appealed many times but to no avail.
On March the 7th, hundreds of migrant workers staged a mass
protest against salary pay delays in Changping City, Dongguan,
Guangdong. Local authorities sent riot police to repress them.
Many workers got injured and were arrested.
In order to rescue her husband, the wife of a worker climbed up
a high-voltage cable tower and shouted, causing a power cut of 3 hours in the surrounding areas.
The Tianlin Lake project is being developed by the Dongguan
See-bal Group, which has delayed payments to its workers.
The project employs one thousand workers and
has cost 500 million yuan (U.S $79 million).
At the start of the year,
the site was closed down all of a sudden.
Since the project owed money, the migrant workers had to
wait over a month for their salaries and have not received any pay to this day.
