Former Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong Challenges Charges
Against Him In His New Book Out Soon

Chen Xitong, former Beijing Communist Party Secretary
denied charges against him in “Conversations with Chen Xitong”;
his new book which will be released soon in Hong Kong.

In it he stated that his imprisonment was
“the biggest case of injustice since the Cultural Revolution.”
Chen appealed to the Supreme People’s Court two years ago,
but they haven’t ever responded to him.
Yao Jianfu, a retired researcher of central government wrote
this book based on a series of interviews with Chen.

Chen was dismissed from his posts in 1995 and convicted on
corruption charges.
In 1998 he was sentenced to 16 years in jail. He won medical
parole in 2004.
According to the verdict, Chen will be formally released
on Aug.1st 2013.

Chen was mayor of Beijing during the June 4th 1989 massacre
and participated in dialogue with students. He also was a member of the Politburo.
Now, days before the 23rd anniversary of June 4th massacre,
Chen has denied the corruption charges in the book and any prominent role in 1989.

The author Yao Jianfu told NTD that 82-year-old Chen
appealed to the Supreme People’s Court two years ago, hoping to redress his case.
Chen told Yao in an interview that the CCP’s infighting used
any means possible, any low-handed actions,
including the most despicable crimes.
He said he was a victim of injustice.

Yao Jianfu: “The book was planned for publication in 2011,
but Chen hopes to release it in 2012.”
NTD reporter: “Why?”
Yao: “Because he is appealing. He wants to have results first.”
NTD reporter: “Has he appealed?”
Yao: “Two year’s ago.”
NTD reporter: “Where did he appeal to?”
Yao: “The Supreme People’s Court sentenced him; he hoped to review his case.”
NTD reporter: “Has the Court replied?”
Yao: “There is no response yet.”

Yao said the purpose of writing the book was to restore
the real history.

NTD Reporter: “Could you explain your initial idea of interviewing Chen?”
Yao: “I want to know the real history.”
NTD reporter: “What’s the importance of doing so?”
Yao: “Because details of history were often different between
facts and propaganda. I want to see an accurate history.”

NTD reporter: “Why does Chen Xitong want to publish the book?”
Yao: “They charged him of economic crimes, he thought it
was injustice, inaccurate and a misjudgment. He told me this.
I decided to write the book.”

NTD reporter: “What’s behind publishing the book?”
Yao: “To let readers know various opinions. I believe readers
are cleverer than writers. They have wisdom to judge whether
it is real history or not.”

NTD reporter: “Was Chen suppressed by Jiang Zemin?”
Yao: “He didn’t know about it. I have no evidence to prove it.
Chen wasn’t corrupt but was accused of corruption .I just
restored the truth to the public. Let the readers judge it.”

Sources said that Chen Xitong was against
at the time Chairman Jiang Zemin.
He was seen as a victim of CCP power struggle.

Wu Guoguang, who wrote the preface for the book, was a
former member of the Office for Restructuring Central Politics.
Wu said Chen had not mentioned any reason why he could
have conflict with Jiang Zemin if it was why he was dismissed.

Wu Guoguang: “He didn’t mention in the book. He said he
didn’t know why he was charged of corruption.
I think at that time, Jiang ruled China. Some opinions said by
removing Chen, Jiang could establish his own power.
In Deng Xiaoping’s late era, Jiang became a leader not to be
challenged.
So it was an important step to dismiss Chen. Jiang certainly
benefited from that action.”

Wu Guoguang believes that the meaning of the book shows
that the CCP is a killing machine.

Wu Guoguang: “Men like Chen Xitong, finally became the
CCP’s prisoner;
no justice and law in this system, no concept of good and bad.
No matter who you are, you could be destroyed by injustice.”

Recently, media reported that Jiang Zemin was promoted due
to the crackdown of the June 4th Tiananmen protest.
Being a head of the military, Jiang was fear of being refused
by the army as he has never used gun.
In 1996, Jiang removed key persons, Yang Shangkun and his
brother from military office, training and using his own allies.
Then Jiang began to target Beijing, an important political place.

After Jiang’s serious preparation, evidence was produced that
from July 1991 to November 1994, Chen Xitong accepted 22
luxury gifts in diplomatic events worth RMB 555,500 Yuan.

These included eight gold and silver items, six expensive
watches, four luxury pens, three cameras, and one camcorder.

Then Chen was jailed for 16 years on account of this evidence.
