As Lin was a restricted free agent, the Knicks had the option to match the Rockets’ offer by 11:59pm Tuesday, but declined.
Maxxis International, a sponsor of the Knicks last season, immediately announced that they will try to follow Lin to Houston.
“We are definitely interested in a sponsorship with the Houston Rockets. We are a Taiwanese-based company and not only are we excited about Jeremy Lin and the exposure he is getting throughout the U.S., but he is huge over in Asia," said Matt Clark, marketing manager for Maxxis International, USA, in a telephone interview with Bloomberg.
Last season’s sponsorship deal with the Knicks by Maxxis included courtside signs, an electronic advertising wrap on the court sidelines, and the back cover of the Knicks’ yearbook. It was the first deal signed after the breakout of “Linsanity".
As well as driving lucrative sponsorship deals, Lin increased ticket sales, television ratings and merchandise. So why did the Knicks let him go?
Although New York initially said that they would match any offer for Lin, the Houston Rockets offered a back-loaded contract that provides $15 million in the third season. Because of other big contracts on their books, this could have stung the Knicks with a $30 – 40 million luxury tax in 2014-15.
Sports consultant Marc Ganis, president of SportsCorp, has called the move a stroke of genius, according to Sports Illustrated: “The Rockets deserve a lot of credit for the way they’ve gone about this. It was extremely intelligent – with an assassin’s touch."
Jeremy Lin himself was more sanguine about the whole affair, simply stating on his Twitter account how pleased he is to be returning to the Rockets, the club that first signed him as an undrafted rookie: “Extremely excited and honored to be a Houston Rocket again!!"
Let the next round of Linsanity commence!
