Public Protest against Officials Tampering with Messages

The Outspoken Southern Weekly newspaper published
a New Year Special which was tampered with by Tuo Zhen,
the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Minister.
This triggered protests from newspaper reporters and editors.
On the night of January 3, the Southern Weekly editorial
department issued a public statement to ask authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
It also asked for the resumption of their proscribed
microblog account.
The incident has led to great indignation of Mainland
Chinese from all walks of life, and voices of condemnation have spoken out all over the Internet.

Southern Weekly customarily published its New Year
Special and New Year’s Message on New Year’s Day.
On the night of January 3, Southern Weekly issued
a public statement saying that South Weekly’s New Year
special issue was modified before publication
under the direction of Tuo Zhen.
In addition to many significant errors appearing
on the front page, reports of anti-Japanese demonstrations from rational patriots were also deleted.

The original article, entitled, “China Dream,
Constitutional Dream" was changed to,
“The Dream Is our Commitment to Corresponding Events,"
which praised the current leader Xi Jinping for bringing up, “China Dream."

In a statement by Southern Weekly, the Propaganda
Department ordered numerous times that
multiple topics in the special issue be deleted,
including the titles, coverage and contents.
Even the Beijing heavy rain coverage was removed
before the final approval.

The statement also said that staff and friends discussing
the special issue published on the afternoon of January 3 on Sina microblog had encountered a gag order.

Southern Weekly editorial department requests
authorities to conduct a thorough investigation regarding
the serious violation of press and the publication process,
and its causing serious errors contrary to actual fact.

Zhu Xinxin, the former editor of Hebei People’s Radio,
pointed out that due to China’s lack of freedom of the press,
Southern Weekly over the years has moved closer
to the masses, making their voices heard in the limited space.
Chinese media people are very proud of Southern Weekly.

Former Hebei People’s Radio Editor, Zhu Xinxin:
“However, they have long been suppressed.
This New Year’s Day article that the propaganda minister
tampered with is actually a blasphemy to the newspaper’s independent status.
This is the suppression from the Party and the officials.

Furthermore, it is a brutal violation of the people’s right
to express.

This event also caused uproar on the network.

Netizens have supported Southern Weekly and denounced
the Propaganda Department of Guangdong on their microblogs.
They requested Tuo Zhen to resign and called
on the authorities to review the censorship system in order
to protect people’s Constitutional rights –
freedom of press and freedom of speech.
Many celebrities and scholars have also joined in
to denounce the behavior.

Peking University Law School professor He Weifang
appealed to save the Southern Weekly, and warned Tuo Zhen not to be a historic criminal.
Columnist Lian Peng: “This bold interference is like a rape
in broad daylight. Sadly, the Chinese people are helpless.”
He believes that as long as the people are persistent, no one
can block the trend of the times, and justice will prevail sooner or later.

Mainland lawyer Pu Zhiqiang said if Southern Weekly
editorial staff desires,
he is willing to join hands with other lawyers for
the prosecution of the Propaganda Department of Guangdong Province and Tuo.

Tang Jingling pointed out that, in the past, the authorities
attacked and suppressed the Southern Weekly. Now it has reached a dangerous moment.

Mainland lawyer Tang Jingling: “If the lawyers raise such
a voice, obviously, it can support these media people.
Forwarding of users’ messages to Tuo Zhen and the forces
Tuo Zhen represents, and gives them the pressure from public opinion.
I think that more importantly, it depends on the attitudes
of these media persons.
If they can take a strong stance, acting together,
the results will be better."

On January 4, Southern Weekly editors and reporters
published an open letter regarding the incident.
They asked Tuo Zhen to step down and apologize, in addition
to lifting gag order of Southern Weekly staff and resuming the operation of their editorial board.

As of 11:40am on January 4th, 35 former editors and
reporters of the Southern Weekly have signed the letter. Signatures are still increasing.

Southern Weekly is part of the Southern Newspaper Media
Group, founded in 1984 to conduct independent investigations and interpretations.
In the mid-1990s, the Communist regime was very unhappy
with its reporting of events, so several of its reporters and editors were removed.
Southern Weekly has been a frequent subject of the Central
Propaganda’s criticism and suppression and even malicious acquisitions to stop its local issue.
