Zhou Yongkang Probe: Over A Dozen Senior Officials Questioned

Reuters cited three sources in a January 17
report, revealing the Chinese regime has
questioned over a dozen senior officials.

This includes the country’s top prosecutor, Cao Jianming,
about links to former security chief Zhou Yongkang

The questioning will not necessarily lead to prosecution.
These investigations into the affairs of China’s top leaders
are deemed to be unprecedented, according to Reuters.
“Officials who were questioned have not been taken
into custody, but are barred from leaving the country."

Zhou Yongkang himself has been put under house
arrest at a villa in the northern port city of Tianjin.
His bodyguards, secretaries and driver have been removed.

He is being guarded by soldiers from the elite 38th Army,
and “contact with the outside world has been totally cut off."

Zhou’s wife, Jia Xiaoye, and his eldest son,
Zhou Bin, are also under investigation.
Several lower-ranking Beijing city government
officials, as well as anchors of state broadcaster
CCTV, have also been questioned, said the report.

However, the Chinese Communist regime has not
publically aknowledged Zhou Yongkang’s case.

Ilham Tohti Arrest Draws International Attention

The arrest of prominent Beijing scholar Ilham Tohti has
drawn attention from both the United States and the EU.
There are calls for the Chinese regime to
explain his arrest, and reveal his whereabouts.

Jen Psaki, spokeswoman for the
U.S. State Department commented.
The United States is “deeply concerned" over the detention
of economist Ilham Tohti, and at least six of his students.

She said the detention “appears to be part of a disturbing
pattern of arrests and detention of public interest lawyers,
internet activists, journalists, religious leaders and others
peacefully challenging official Chinese policies and actions."

Jen Psaki emphasized Washington’s concerns.

European Union Ambassador to China, Markus Ederer,
spoke in a briefing with reporters on Friday in Beijing.
He urged Chinese authorities to clarify what
charges Ilham Tohti might be facing, and to
inform Ilham’s family of his whereabouts

He urged the regime that “if these charges
cannot be substantiated, release him."

Ilham’s wife told media on the January 17 that, she
does not believe Ilham has committed any crime.
His daily routine is teaching, researching, and baby sitting.

Currently, Beijing human rights lawyer
Li Fangping has been involved in the case.

One-Person Protest: Ye Hongxia Detained

Beijing resident Ye Hongxia recently
initiated a one-person protest in Beijing.
It has been confirmed that she was
detained by the police on January 16.

Voice of America reported that Ye Hongxia was arrested
while she was protesting against violent demolition.
She protested alone, in a busy area in Beijing.

Currently, the charges for her detention are unclear,
and her family has not received any arrest warrant.

According to Ye Hongxia’s friend, she told
them in advance to commission human rights
lawyer Cheng Hai as her defense attorney.
