Jiang Zemin’s Public Appearance Followed by Officials
Dismissed or Resiging in Jiangsu and Hainan.

On Jan.3, China’s four major portal websites and social
networks forwarded a report of former Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) president Jiang Zemin’s visit to Dongshan
Mountain, Hainan Province, during the New Year holiday.
However, all these reports were soon removed from the
websites, which has drawn attention from the public.

The second day after removal of the reports about Jiang
Zemin, Yang Weize, the party secretary of Nanjing City,
Jiangsu Province, was officially placed under investigation.
Jiangsu is Jiang Zemin’s home.
Yang thus becomes the first provincial-level official
to be investigated in 2015.

Jiang Dingzhi, the governor of Hainan Province where Jiang
made his New Year appearance, also resigned the same day.

This soon led to various speculations about
the backstage story.

There has yet to be evidence showing those two officials
are linked to Jiang Zemin.
However, many believe that as Jiang has a special status,
any news removal or release is very likely to result from
power struggles behind the scenes.

Families of Victims in Shanghai Stampede Protested
at The Municipal Government Building.

The family of victims in Shanghai stampede accident protested
against officials’ inefficient work of coping with the aftermath.

A South China Morning Post report said, dozens of family
members of accident victims gathered in front of Shanghai
municipal government building on Jan. 4. They demanded
compensation and to take back the bodies of the victims.

The report said, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) claimed
they were still investigating the cause of the accident.
Most bodies of the victims are still left in the mortuary.

However, the bodies of two foreigners, including one
Taiwanese and a Malaysian, were claimed by their families.
Mainland Chinese families thus demanded the same, to claim
the bodies as soon as possible. The CCP denied their request.

On Dec.31, a deadly stampede occurred during a New Year
celebration event on the Bund.
This led to at least 36 deaths and another 49 injured.

Shanghai police admitted that there were not enough
police present on New Year’s Eve.

50 Occupy Central Leaders Will be Arrested by Hong Kong
Police as “Retrospective Punishment".

On Jan.5, Hong Kong police started the first round of
“appointed arrests" against Occupy Central activists.
Hong Kong media commented that, the move is an
“retrospective punishment" against protesters.

Apple Daily said, police officers from Organized Crime and
Triad Bureau called organizers of the Occupy Central.
The call asked these activist leaders to visit the police for
investigation, and clearly told them they would be arrested.

The report said, about 50 people are on the list of first-round
“appointment arrests".
These include student group leaders, core members of pan-
democracy groups and three founders of Occupy Central.

The report quoted Alex Chow, secretary-general of the
Hong Kong Federation of Students, who said their struggle
for general election would not be stopped by any such
“retrospective punishment" moves.
