STORY:
Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of Taiwan’s Environmental Protection Administration building on Thursday. They’re urging the government to scrap plans to build an offshore refinery and petrochemical plant on Taiwan’s western coast.
上周四,数百名抗议人士聚集在台湾的环保署大楼门口。他们诉求敦促政府取消在台湾西部海岸建置海上炼油和石化厂的计划。
The Kuokuang Petrochemical Technology Company refinery project is led by state-run oil refiner CPC Corporation. It has been the subject of an extended environmental impact review.
国光石化的炼油计划是由国营炼油企业﹣中油公司所主导。这项计划一直以来都是对延伸的环境延伸影响审查的重点议题。
Protesters warned the project will foul the air and hurt dolphins.
抗议人士警告,这项计划将会污染空气并且对海豚造成伤害。
[Hsu Li-ling, Protester]:
“Three kilometers away from my house is another petrochemical company and another three kilometers away is another, I want to ask who is willing to live in a place like this. How many kids like her will have to wear a mask in the future and live their life.”
抗议人士许莉玲说:“离我家三公里处是另一间石化公司,再三公里又是另外一家。我想问,有谁会想要住在像这样的地方。又有多少像她一样的孩子,未来将必需要戴着面罩生活?”
[Ku Chien-ch’u, Protester]:
“The air will be polluted and vegetables will be polluted, inedible.”
抗议人士顾建楚说:“空气和蔬菜都将会被污染,不能吃了。”
Taiwan is working on more transparent environmental reviews for new projects and tougher energy laws.
台湾正在针对新的建设项目,制定更加透明的环境审查机制,和更严谨的能源法。
Some protesters feel there is still more to do.
但一些抗议人士们觉得,仍然有更多需要去做的事。
[Chu’ang Yung-hsiang, Protester]:
“The government should work out some rules for the development of clean energy in the petrochemical industry for energy saving emissions reduction."
抗议人士常永翔说:“政府应该就石化业发展干净能源以节能减碳上,制订一些规则。”
As protesters chanted slogans and waved banners outside the building, inside officials held the fifth environmental impact assessment to be carried out on the project.
当抗议群众在大楼外围高呼口号、挥舞标语时,大楼内的官员们正在举进行该计划项目的第五次环评会议。
Taiwan industrialized in the 1980s with little public protest to become one of Asia’s four economic dragons.
台湾在80年代工业化后,遂成为亚洲经济四小龙之一,少有公开抗议事件。
