Self-Financed Checkups Initiated for Kidney Stone Babies

Home for Kidney Stone Babies (jieshibaobao.com ) founder
Zhao Lianhai, announced that facing the inaction of
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities,

a self-financed physical examination project was launched to
offer checkups for the children harmed by tainted milk.
The initial examination outcome showed that
a large proportion of kidney stone babies still have kidney stones remaining in their bodies.
Zhao said he would submit the result officially,
pushing the authorities to make the information fully public, to fulfill obligations.

Beijing-based former media professional Zhao Lianhai,
also a father of kidney stone baby harmed by tainted milk,
announced on November 12 that, with the CCP authorities’
inaction, supported by civil society with RMB 100,000 worth of funding,
The Home for Kidney Stone Babies initiated a project to
take a full-scale physical examination of child victims of the 2008 Chinese milk scandal.

Zhao Lianhai: “The donation is a little over RMB 100,000,
that will help us start the project."

Zhao said that this time, six checks would be made first,
so as to learn the latest condition of the kidney stone babies.

Zhao Lianhai: “As far as I know, about a dozen parents
took their kids to go through the checkups.
The feedback is not optimistic, kidney stones still remain
in the children’s bodies.
The kidneys of some children have suffered serious damage,
Some undertook kidney nephrectomy,
some have kidneys which have contracted,
or have substantial renal function damages. “

Zhao Lianhai said that currently, The Kidney Stone Babies
Home keeps in touch with 300 victim parents.
Through the examinations, The Kidney Stone Babies Home
intends to make a general assessment of the condition of afflicted children.

Zhao Lianhai: “We hope that by starting the checkup project,
we may make a general assessment of condition of the children,
so that more child victims are encouraged to come and
have checkups.
A sufficient quantity will help us generate relatively objective
data. The checkup deadline is on February 15, 2012. “

Zhao said that the project could have been started
in 2009, but was laid aside due to his being jailed.
Now they have restarted the project, due to concern over the
CCP authorities’ inaction in the face of reality.

In 2008 in China a melamine-tainted milk incident broke out.

Official data showed that tainted milk had led to 296 000
Infants suffering from kidney stones, including six deaths.
Zhao Lianhai said that the real figure is much higher, with
perhaps over 2 million child victims across China.

In the past three years, the parents of kidney stone babies
continue to safeguard their rights but are suppressed by the CCP authorities,
some have even been sentenced to jail terms.

Zhao Lianhai was arrested in late 2009, charged with
Crime of Provocation and Affray.
Zhao was released on medical parole in Nov.,2010.

This summer, he raised money from society to help
provide checkups for the kidney stones babies.

Xiang Qingyu (Kidney stone baby’s parent, Jiangsu):
“Zhao Lianhai is the representative of our victim’s parents.
He is responsible for the children. At present, the authorities
are not concerned about this issue,
so we make our own effort to seek some security for the
health of these child victims “

Zhao said too many children still suffered from
these conditions. Some had varying degrees of deterioration.
However, the CCP authorities have long been inactive on this,

blocking and suppressing the attempts of the victim’s
parents to investigate, thus not allowing the project to proceed.

Zhao Lianhai: “In early 2009, we submitted an open letter to
the Ministry of Health, China Dairy Industry Association, and the State Administration of Petition.
We require that each year, the kidney stone babies be
offered a regular checkup.
In late 2009, we made high-profile examinations, but I was put
into jail, and so the issue has been set aside until now. ”

After the melamine-tainted milk incident, the public demanded
to be able to ascertain the accountability of the implicated producers and related official departments.
The CCP authorities also made a statement,
claiming to set up a RMB 200-million medical liability compensation fund
for the free treatment of victim children, to continue up until
they reached 18 years of age.

However, this May, the magazine Oriental Outlook revealed
that in reality,
the victim children have not received any compensation,
nor any medical treatment.
As to the RMB 200-million medical liability compensation fund
over past two years, the issues related to compensations,
management operation and cash balances,
have all become a myth.

China Dairy Industry Association president, Song Kungang,
claimed that the compensation fund was directly managed by the CCP authorities.
While China Life Insurance Company, the party that was
entrusted with actual management, said,
“This is a state secret, not appropriate to be released.”

In late May, Zhao Lianhai and several other victim’s parents
went to China Dairy Industry Association to express their concerns, but were detained by the police for 10 hours.

Zhao Lianhai has never given up supporting the victim’s
children. He keeps appealing to victim’s parents to bring their children for checkups.
