Chinese Petitioner Forced to Seek Help from U.S. Consulate

If petitioners get the opportunity to meet Premier
Wen Jiabao and submit petition materials, will it be a positive or negative step?
During the last year, the experiences of Wang Chunmei,
a petitioner from Dalian, and her family show us a sad story.

In Dalian, the four families of Wang Chunmei and her sisters
were forcibly removed from their privately owned house.
The 800 square meter property of four was taken
by the government and developers.
Following this, Wang and her family started
the petitioning process in Beijing.
Recently, Wang Chunyan, the elder sister
of Wang Chunmei, was taken away.
Helpless, Wang Chunmei planned to seek help from U.S.
Ambassador Gary Locke.
Wang had learned from the blind activist
Chen Guangcheng.

Wang Chunmei: “Hi everyone, I am Wang Chunmei,
a citizen from Dalian.
We were forcibly removed from our house in 2008,
and our family started the petition process after that.
Now our family are have been tortured
on the road of petitioning.
My mother died in Beijing Tiantai Hospital,
and was not cremated.
I went to the embassy many times in May this year to seek
help form Ambassador Gary Locke.
He had helped Chen Guangcheng before,
so I hoped he could help me. There is too much injustice.”

Wang Chunyan was escorted back to Dalian
a few days ago by Dalian Municipal Office in Beijing. She has been not been contactable since.
The latest news on June 9 reported that authorities took
Wang Chunyan into custody.
They said that she was “anti-Party and anti-socialist”.

News of Wang Chunyan became widespread. On June 30
last year, Wang met with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Premier Wen Jiabao.
Wen Jiabao was visiting the waiting room
of Beijing South Railway Station.
Wang Chunyan got the opportunity to shake hands with him,
and then submitted a thick stack of petition materials.
Wen promised her, “I will read the materials seriously.”

Day after day, Wang Chunyan and her family began
to despair. They were full of expectations.

Wang Chunmei: “Dalian Municipal Office in Beijing
mentioned that my problem can never be solved, even if you have a chance to see Wen Jiabao.
They always say something like that and keep the
pressure against us. Therefore, we have no choice.
If we have to die, we prefer to die
in front of the U.S. embassy.”

Wang Chunmei said that by learning from Chen Guangcheng,
she and her sisters and brothers went to the U.S. Embassy thirty times to start the “petition process.”
They hope to seek help from Gary Locke, but have
not been in contact with any embassy officials yet.
The local government in Dalian felt upset and brought
Wang Chunyan into the detention center with an excuse.

Commentator Shida said that it shows that Chinese
petitioners have nowhere to go. They have to seek help from foreign governments.

Shida: “Chinese petitioners are not afraid of death.
They will seek help from anywhere. Some of them even go to the UN.
Therefore, these foreign events make
the CCP lose face in front of the world.”

The Chen Guangcheng event caught Beijing off guard,
and not only local government in Linyi, Shandong.
Mr. Deng, a petitioner from Jilin, who has remained
in Beijing for many years,
said the government intensified the suppression of
the petitioners after that event.
He thought petitioners should help
each other to gain momentum.

Shida: “More and more petitioners recognized that if CCP
is stays in power, their grievances will never get resolved.
So they turned to another way,
and completely abandon the CCP.”

Wang Chunyan submitted petition
materials to Premier Wen Jiabao.
One month later, her younger brother was attacked
by officials of Dalian Municipal Office in Beijing. This resulted in a perforated eardrum.
Wang Chunyan said that if their problem cannot be solved
after the meeting with the Premier, what can they do?
They can only seek justice themselves
by learning from Qian Mingi and Yang Jia.
