Former Top CCP Leaders love to “show off" But Hu
Former top leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),
Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, all seemed to like swimming during a “critical period".
Today, the highest leader Hu Jintao is rarely seen swimming,
even at Beidaihe, the summer tourist seaside resort.
Why is Hu Jintao so different from Mao-Deng-Jiang?
Are there hidden clues? Let’s look at the commentators’ analysis.
An article by associate editor of U.S. based Foreign Policy
magazine, Isaac Stone Fish, on the Foreign Policy website
on August 14, discusses CCP leaders favorite hobby
of swimming.
The article said that Mao Zedong like swimming at Beidaihe.
In addition, Mao also swam in the Yangtze River in 1966,
which was a highly symbolic trip.
In the summer of 1989, Deng Xiaoping when staying
at Beidaihe, swam one hour a day,
even during the June 4th Incident,
a brutal suppression of students.
And it was Deng who ordered the massacre.
Wu Fan, overseas magazine editor-in-chief of China Affairs,
stated that Mao-Deng’s open swimming is actually a political language.
Wu Fan: “Mao swam against the current and used it to express
that those who do not follow him would drown in water.
He would get rid of them.
He is the only one who was able to lead us forward.
He asked others to swim with him right after ‘people’s
communes’ had been established.
Shortly before the Cultural Revolution,
he wanted to swim again and asked people to join him.
That meant he wanted everyone to follow him.”
Issac Fish points out that Jiang Zemin swam to prove himself.
In 1997, rumor spread in the outside world that he looked “unhealthy."
Therefore, during Jiang’s visit to the United States,
he swam on the public beach in Hawaii.
However, photos of Jiang’s bulging belly floating
on the water caused a lot of ridicule from netizens.
They said, “It’s simply a floating corpse.”
Some said, “disgusting!”
Wu Fan: “The photo of Jiang Zemin failed miserably.
Some said it was a toad floating in the water,
that he did not move, that he was surrounded by several
bodyguards watching, he did not swim against the tide,
and that he did not swim at all.
No one knows who dreamed this up and it is embarrassing.”
Political commentator Lan Shu commented that
Jiang Zemin loves to show off.
Even after he retired, he was still showing off on camera.
Lan Shu: “Jiang Zemin is not very capable and
had only the ability of a section chief.
However, he likes to show off, and is also self-centered.
He likes to be a sycophant. Give him a stage, he’ll perform.”
However, Lan Shu stated that since the “Wang/Bo Incident,”
Media controlled by Jiang’s faction continue to spread rumors,
and even brought out photos of Jiang meeting with someone.
Outsiders are skeptical of the authenticity of his photos.
As for the incumbent President Hu Jintao or other CCP leaders,
rarely would one of them wear a swim suit to make a high profile debut.
Lan Shu analyzed that the third generation of CCP leaders are
basically technocrats with a professional background.
Hu’s background also predetermines his low-key style.
Lan Shu: “Those technocrats had demonstrated being
more obedient during the course of their career.
Factions or leagues are also the Party’s helpers with
the status of the auxiliary, obedient position.
Thus, look at Hu Jintao or Li Keqiang and others,
they are very low-key in public and do things carefully.”
Issac Fish believes that Hu Jintao’s health is very good.
Younger than the previous leaders, his low-key approach
seem to carry hidden mystery.
Fish thinks it may result from disagreeing
with the former leader.
In addition, the article specifically mentioned that Bo Xilai,
the former Chongqing Party Secretary, also loves to “show off."
Bo is a representative of Jiang Zemin and Zhou Yongkang.
