Further Criticism Over China Central Television Errors
On the first day of 2014, the Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) state-controlled China Central Television
(CCTV) again made errors in it’s broadcasting.
First U.S. President George. Washington was erroneously
mentioned in a documentary film about the Civil War.
This received criticism from netizens.
On January 1, CCTV broadcast a history
documentary called, “Fascinating Records – Guns".
The film analyzed the advantages
and disadvantages of weapons.
It used stories of specific armed campaigns from China
and around the world, to look at the impact of guns.
The fifth episode looked at the sniper rifle. In one story, the
American Civil War’s Battle of Brandywine was featured.
Confederate soldier Ferguson was described to take
aim at a Union Army Officer, named George Washington.
Wang Beiji, political commentator: “The first
President of America was George Washington.
The President during the Civil War was
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President.
It is quite absurd to mention a President from 1789
in a story 1861, as there is 88 years difference."
There were also further errors. The American
Civil War took place between 1861 and 1865.
The Battle of Brandywine was in the Revolutionary
War, which took place from 1775 to 1783.
George. Washington was Commander in Chief in the
Revolutionary War, becoming first President in 1789.
Some netizens questioned: “Is it a comedy?"
Some netizens also joked: “How tragic the Civil War
continued through a period with 14 US Presidents."
Zhu Xinxin, former editor, Hebei People’s Radio:
“It might be because some editors or authors
have a relatively poor knowledge of history
It might also be that CCTV intentionally rewrote
and distorted history to promote the Chinese regime."
Political commentator Wang Beiji pointed out
that as CCP state-controlled media, its mission
dictates that it should commit such naive mistakes
Wang Beiji: “It’s quite normal for reports to be wrong,
careless and bureaucratic with regard to international news.
Reports conceal the fact about China, and
distort international news, because its mission
is to misinform people and distort history."
They don’t feel shame on violating journalist’s ethics.
Last April, people reorganized the CCTV ‘Fraud Collection’.
This included the picture of “a lady with
two ID’s from CCTV’s Focus program.
It also included one man who had two nationalities,
as well as bats being the leading cause of SARS virus."
The most famous fraud program in CCTV is
former Director of 610 Office Li Dongsheng.
As Deputy Director of CCTV, Li organized the
propaganda campaign “Tiananmen Self-immolation".
NTD Television produced a documentary called False Fire.
This was a comprehensive analysis of the self-immolation
incident, winning the 51st Columbus International Film
and Television Festival" Honorable Mention.
On December 31, Chen Zonghe, a Shanghai Corporate
Training Project Specialist, reported that CCTV committed
public slander by showing a non-existent website.
He posted a screenshot of the program in
question, Global Vision, in his microblog.
The screenshot revealed criticism and condemnation of
U.S. President Obama from a Chinese Twitter account.
Social media platforms Twitter and
Facebook do not exist on Chinanet.
The CCP has blocked access to them.
Chen Zonghe’s allegation against CCTV gained public
support, being referred to as the end of year black humor.
Why did CCTV contradict itself posting false Twitter images?
Zhu Xinxin: “One possibility is that they
forgot you can’t access Twitter in China.
Another possibility was to intentionally show
Twitter to the public, as they know Chinese
people are dissatisfied with internet blockades."
Many CCTV errors have already triggered public anger.
Recently, CCTV was ranked top on China’s “Scum
Rankings", launched by the mainland netizens.
