Li Wangyang’s Close Friends Monitored
Li Wangyang, the leading Chinese democracy activist,
died mysteriously on June 6, drawing worldwide attention.
Yin Zhengan, Li’s childhood acquaintance and a participant
in Damon and Pythias Yinzheng An pro-democracy activities,
was interviewed by Hong Kong’s Ming Pao Daily News.
He said, after the incident of Li Wangyang “suicide,"
he continued to suffer from Shaoyang’s public security.
Under the pressure from public security, his wife promised
to report his daily whereabouts and
attempted to steal his mobile phone cards
to give them to the public security.
In late July, another friend of Li Wangyang, Zhu Chengzhi,
published Li’s hanging pictures,
and was charged with “subversion of state power"
by the communist authorities.
Shortly after that, the public security searched Yin Zhengan’s
teahouse, confiscated his computer and camera,
and took him to the Public Security Bureau for interrogation.
Yin Zhengan recalls the scene in fear: “I was sitting on the
interrogation chair with handcuffs and chains on my legs, I could not move."
Zhu Chengzhi charge of felony is a “warning” to others,
thinks Yin Zhengan.
Li Wangyang’s sister and brother-in-law were threatened
by the authorities,
and were not allowed to ask questions about Li’s death,
and were not interviewed about it too.
Ming Pao also said that not only Li Wangyang’s family
and friends in Shaoyang city have been closely monitored.
Also pro-democracy activists in the mainland,
concerned about Li Wangyang, have been implicated.
Qin Yongmin, Chairman of China Human Rights Watch,
has been detained for several days by the public security.
As to the death of Li Wangyang, Qin Yongmin stated:
“Nobody believes this blind man committed suicide,
in such obvious to the outsiders manner."
Yin Zhengan assures he will not give up pursuing the truth
about Li’s death, adding, “He was a dear friend of mine."
