Public Letter Calls for Justice for Mao’s Crimes
On August 26, a number of old intellectuals
in Chengdu published a public letter.
It was entitled, “Bring Justice for Mao’s Monstrous Cultural
Revolution Crimes- a Public Letter to the 18th National People’s Congress (NPC) by a Number of Historical Seniors”.
The letter pointed out that in order to build China
into a democratic, prosperous, strong, and just country,
we must bring to justice the political legacy
of the totalitarian dictatorship of Mao Zedong.
It urged justice for Mao’s crimes, as the one
responsible for the launch of Culture Revolution.
The historical truth needs to be revealed,
and bring fairness to society.
This is also the core of political reform,
and a touchstone on which to measure political reform.
21 senior citizens left their names and phone numbers,
saying they had witnessed Mao Zedong’s political movement.
The letter was written to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP):
“Mao used the CCP’s name to rule China for 27 years,
and launched political movements one after another.
In the case of supporters of Hu Feng,
the victims were in the thousands.
With the anti-rightist movement, victims
numbered in the hundreds of thousands.
There were tens of millions of victims during
the decade-long atrocities of the Cultural Revolution.”
According to incomplete statistics, Mao was the leading
cause of 83 million innocent people’s deaths.
He caused 30 million cases of injustice, and over 300 million
people were affected by the many political campaigns.
This exceeds the sum of evils resulting
from all tyrants in China’s history.
Hitler caused the death of 6 million Jews,
Stalin caused the death of 20 million Soviet people.
Their crimes against humanity pale
in comparison to Mao’s crimes.
The senior citizens pointed out in the public letter that
from the time when the CCP came into power until Mao’s death in 1976,
there was no civil war and no major natural disasters.
Due to the so-called ‘Three-Year Difficult Times’
and the Cultural Revolution, there were economic losses amounting to RMB 142 million.
This was more than double the total investment
in infrastructure during the first 30 years of rule.
The letter highlighted that Mao Zedong wanted to change
the party dictatorship into a family-controlled authority.
In the name of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution,
and by use of mass movements, Mao killed many people.
This included President Liu Shaoqi, Defense Minister
Peng Dehuai, Marshall He Long, Vice Premier Tao Zhu,
Secretary of Tianjin Municipal Committee Wan Xiaotang,
and Hunan Provincial Party Secretary Zhou Xiaozhou.
Yunnan Provincial Party Secretary Yan Hongyan,
Shanxi Provincial Party Secretary Wei Heng,
as well as a large number of important leaders
in early stages of the CCP.
The historical resolution adopted in 1981 in the Eleventh
Plenary claims that Mao Zedong made a mistake.
It stated that he was used by the Lin Biao
and Jiang Qing counter-revolutionary groups.
Three decades have passed now, so it is time
to reveal the historical truth."
Xiong Xili was a victim of Mao and he was classified
as a rightist in 1957 during Mao’s movements.
The wicked influence of Mao still hinders
the development of society today.
Xiong Xili: “Mao’s crimes have to be brought to justice
for a true renaissance of China, and for its social progress.
Without bringing Mao’s crimes to justice, society can’t develop.
All the corruption and social moral decay was caused by Mao.
Since we did not have justice for Mao’s crimes,
it greatly hinders our social development today.”
Xiong Xili highlights that if we do not eliminate the sins
of Mao, there cannot be a constitutional democracy in China. A revival is just an empty talk.
Yang Mingchuan, one of the authors of the public letter,
believes that they proposed to completely bring Mao’s
crimes to justice before the 18th NPC.
To reveal the historical truth, and hope that China could
change its extreme authoritarian and the dictatorial regime.
It could eliminate Mao’s ideology,
so that China will have a future.
Yang Mingchuan: “Since 1949, Mao
suppressed the so-called counter-revolutionaries.
From 1957 to the Cultural Revolution, it’s all his sins.
History should draw a new conclusion."
Another author of the letter, Liao Chiming,
had been imprisoned for 15 years.
He pointed out that according to his experiences,
there is no truth to the CCP’s frequent changes. It never tells the truth.
Even so, he should also fulfill the responsibility
as a citizen, and hopes China to become better.
Liao Chiming: “If you do not carry out political reform,
it will be difficult for our country to have a future."
Xiong Xili commented that they
are old now, and may pass away soon.
As historical witnesses, they have the responsibility
to reveal the true history to the world.
