Nankai University President Criticizes Minister of Education

Nankai University President, Gong Ke, spoke of not repeating
historical leftist mistakes, while addressing the ideology of
intellectuals in an interview.

His talk was considered a confrontation to an earlier remark
by the minister of education.
But some media have deleted their relevant reports.

On Feb. 9, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media,
people.com.cn held an interview on the topic of
“improving college propaganda and ideology work".

Also participating were Gou Zhongwen, Beijing’s Municipal
Education Committee secretary; Jin Nuo, Party secretary of
the Renmin University of China; Gong Ke, Nankai University
president; Zhu Zhiwen, the Fudan University Party secretary;
and Shen Jian, director of Jiangsu Department of Education.

Gong Ke said, “I saw someone speaking online about
comprehensive work to clean, purify and rectify teachers;
I can’t agree with it, as it’s an ideology of 1957 or 1966."

Gong Ke says “strengthening ideological work" must not go
to the other extreme, and the leftist mistakes in history
towards the intellectuals cannot be repeated.

Ming Xia, Professor of Political Science, City University of
New York, Staten Island: “There are people in China today
who have experienced disasters and hardships, or who even
remember the pains of the Cultural Revolution."
“They are rational and critical, have learned about global
universal values, and are educated."
“The majority of them should have realized that
without stopping this kind of mad ideological development,
China will enter its next disaster and they themselves will
become the victims."

Radio France Internationale reported that Gong Ke was
clearly criticizing the minister of education, Yuan Guiren,
for his demand to rectify the college staff.

The People’s Daily also reported Ke’s comment.

Zhu Xinxin, Freelance Writer: “The law is replaced by
political power and freedom of thought is repressed."
“This ‘rectification of the teaching staff’ is a disguised
class struggle, a repetition of the extreme-leftist conduct;
It’s surely not welcome."

“This shows that there has not been any real reflection made
over the Cultural Revolution, nor over Mao’s sins."

Gong Ke earlier mentioned 1957 and 1966.

1957 was when the CCP started the Great Leap Forward,
where people were forced to lie and deceive,
to the point of creating the Great Famine in the 1960s.

1966 saw the political struggle of the extreme left
and the start of the Cultural Revolution.
They brought immense pain to the entire Chinese population.

Professor Ming Xia indicates that it is not known
whether the CCP intends to engage in another movement,
but following the leftist trend will push China to an extreme.

Ming Xia: “People tend to follow the trend, which will lead to
an uncontrollable situation, chaos, and a lack of conscience;
It will become like the Cultural Revolution."

What’s strange about Gong Ke’s report is that it initially
seemed to be supported by Party media, but was later deleted.

Zhu Xinxin: “Why? It’s because words can’t be put bluntly;
It has to be conveyed in a different way."
“This exactly proves that in China, there is still no freedom of
speech; people will abandon their principles under this kind of
high-pressure control."

The debate on ideology has been seen in Party media recently.

First, Party magazine qstheory.cn reported that university
faculties ‘discredit China’, which was highly refuted by
Communist Youth Online.

Another Party media, Liaoning Daily, reported that journalists
had gone undercover at universities to monitor their teaching.
And now it has sparked an uproar about “ideology",
“leftist vs. rightist" and so on.
